Computed Tomography

Computed tomography inspections are highly effective processes used within the section to reveal various material characteristics including:

  • Defect and inclusion studies
  • Dimensional measurements
  • Internal shape
  • Density measurements

11T magnet coil 3D volume

This technique can be administered to gain 2D and 3D cross-sectional images of a material with highly dimensional accuracy giving the operator a clear map of the material including all the characteristics listed above.

A mobile tomograph specially developed here at CERN enables us to visualise, among other things, the correct positioning of the RF fingers inside the interconnections without opening it.

Rayscan portative tomograph performing inspection into LHC tunnel

This technique is carried out by an experienced operator within the section. The application of this technique can be used in conjunction with all industrial materials, metals, polymers, composites, ceramics etc.
